"Rosemary's Baby" is a 1968 horror film based on the Roman Polanski novel of the same name. It was released by American International Pictures, who were also distributing the film when they were run by Roger Corman. It was adapted by Paul Verhoeven and directed by Roman Polanski, with a screenplay by Polanski and Jack Nicholson. The film stars Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse, a young pregnant woman who finds out that the child she is carrying is the spawn of Satan and that she will be murdered by Satan.
Synopsis
Rosemary Woodhouse is a young New York housewife with a baby daughter and a baby son. Rosemary is pleased that her pregnancy has been uneventful, and has not even gained weight. She is unaware that she is pregnant with the child of Satan, although she suspects that she might be, due to the fact that her boyfriend, Paul, has been acting strangely.
Rosemary is next seen while shopping for baby clothes with her pregnant mother, Prudence, at the fashionable London department store Harrod's. The cashier, who recognizes Rosemary as the former fiancée of Prudence's husband, delivers the news to her that her fiancée's first wife is now pregnant. Prudence later sends Rosemary home to be alone for a while, warning her not to get involved in any new relationships while she is pregnant.
Returning home, Rosemary discovers that her fiancé Paul is dead. She initially assumes that the baby is his, but when she opens a Christmas present from Paul, she discovers a human heart in the box. She hides the heart and later tells her mother that the gift was a tree, and that she has to go to her friend Chris' party that night.
While at the party, Rosemary learns from her mother that Paul's first wife had a miscarriage after finding out she was pregnant with Paul's baby. She later tells Rosemary that the heart in the Christmas box was Paul's, which Rosemary returns to her apartment. Rosemary is later abducted by strange men in the middle of the night, and brought to an old, derelict house, where she is impregnated and then tortured by a witch doctor named Mr. Yamata.
